Measuring Antioxidants

Different laboratories may measure these ORAC values differently and each fruit or vegetable, or other AntiOX Superfood could have a slightly different ORAC value based on ripeness, soil, and other factors, as applicable.  The ORAC values listed below are approximations.

High-ORAC Fruits & Vegetables

ORAC units per 100 grams (about 3½ ounces)

Dark chocolate has more than 13,000 ORAC units and milk chocolate has about 6,700, according to the Chocolate Manufacturers Association in McLean, Va. Unsweetened powdered cocoa starts out with almost twice as much antioxidants as dark chocolate, but when it's diluted with water or milk and sugar to make hot chocolate, the flavonoid total per serving plummets to about half that in milk chocolate.

ORAC values of honey (per gram) are similar to those of many fruits and vegetables.  Numerous epidemiological and cohort studies have suggested that nuts are a potential source of dietary antioxidants, which have been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases. There are several different methods used to measure antioxidant levels. The chart below highlights values using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) method. While more research is needed, this chart gives a nice overview of both the antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content of nuts and other foods.
